THE STORY
In 1955, UT student Henry "HK" Pitts inventede the iconic hand shape during a playful dorm room session of making shadow puppets on a wall. He notioced the shadow looked like a longhorn steer's head and showed the gesture to his friend (and Head Yell Leader) Harley Clark.
Clark fell in love with idea and decided to introduce it to the student body at a Friday night pep rally, ahead of a game against the TCU Horned Frogs - He declared it the OFFICIAL HAND SIGN OF THE UNIVERSITY.
The following day, November 12, 1955; the hand gesture made it's stadium debut, where fans filled the stands with the iconic hand sign.
Since before this time, the Aggie War Hymn has featured the energetic and defiant line: "Saw Varsity's Horns off!" (Varsity was an early name used by The University of Texas before "Longhorns" and "Bevo" bacame official).
